>> About Jon Bruning

For more than 10 years, Jon Bruning has been one of the most trusted and accomplished public servants in Nebraska.  He is widely recognized for his committed leadership as our state’s top law enforcement officer and his tireless advocacy for Nebraska families, farms, and businesses.

In 2002, Jon Bruning was elected the youngest Attorney General in Nebraska’s history and ran unopposed for re-election in 2006.  Prior to his service as Attorney General, Bruning ran a law practice in Omaha and served for six years in the Nebraska Legislature.

As state senator, Bruning worked to provide income tax cuts and property tax relief to reduce the financial burden on taxpayers.  He began his “tough on crime” platform by offering legislation to increase penalties for violent criminals, especially those convicted of murdering police officers.  Bruning also promoted legislation to change Nebraska’s method of execution to lethal injection instead of the electric chair.

Jon Bruning has earned a reputation as “The People’s Lawyer” for his even-handed application of the law as our state’s Attorney General.  He has been applauded for his efforts to appeal excessively lenient sentences and prosecute elected officials who have violated state laws.

Bruning has made the prosecution of violent criminals, sex offenders, and drug manufacturers the focus of his “tough on crime” approach. He authored legislation requiring mandatory 15-year prison sentences for sexual crimes against children and worked with the legislature to increase penalties for methamphetamine manufacturers and traffickers.  Under Bruning’s leadership, Nebraska has seen an 86 percent decrease in the number of meth labs.

Jon Bruning’s experience extends far beyond Nebraska’s borders.  His travels to Asia, Europe, South America, and the Middle East, combined with his work as Attorney General, earned him an Aspen-Rodel Fellowship in Public Leadership in 2005.  As a member of the German Marshall Fund and the American Council of Young Political Leaders, he has visited with world leaders and traveled to more than 25 countries.

Born and raised in Lincoln, Bruning received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Nebraska.  Bruning and his wife, Deonne, live in Lincoln with their two children, Lauren and Jack.
